Founded in 1997, Sea to Summit Trekking was born out of pure Himalayan passion and endurance. The name draws inspiration from Australian mountaineer Tim Macartney-Snape’s legendary 1990 expedition—where he walked and climbed every foot from the Bay of Bengal to the summit of Mount Everest. Carrying that same relentless spirit and genuine mountain heritage, we established our agency to lead authentic, responsible expeditions across the Nepal Himalayas.
With over two decades of navigating the world’s most rugged high-altitude terrains, our standard of safety remains unmatched: a 100% summit success rate, zero rescues, and zero casualties.
From classic trekking circuits to demanding alpine adventures, we deliver precision logistics and deep local insight. In 2022, alongside our longtime French partners, our team achieved a successful summit of Dhampus Peak and crossed Dhaulagiri Base Camp. That expedition ignited the ambition to undertake Nepal’s ultimate challenge: the Great Himalaya Trail (GHT). Over the following three years of dedication and resilience, we turned that dream into reality, successfully guiding and completing the epic traverse across the breadth of the country.
Every expedition we lead is rooted in the journey of our founder and chairman, Karma Lama.
Born in the remote village of Ratankot in Sindhupalchowk, Karma’s life began among the steep ridges of the Himalayas. By age 16, he entered the trekking industry as a high-altitude porter, carrying heavy loads across grueling passes. Through perseverance, deep mountain instinct, and discipline, he worked his way up to become a trusted Sardar (lead expedition guide) and ultimately established Sea to Summit Trekking.
Karma's commitment to Nepal extends far beyond high mountain passes. Guided by the spiritual mentorship of Geshe Pema-la of Bodong Monastery, he has dedicated decades to grassroots humanitarian work and community upliftment across rural Nepal. Over the years, he has spearheaded and supported vital social initiatives, partnering with organizations such as:
When the devastating 2015 earthquake struck Nepal, Karma mobilized immediate front-line relief, coordinating critical medical aid, shelter, and rescue operations in hard-hit remote villages in partnership with Israel AID and the Red Cross.
